Collection: INTER-MEDIO | Latinx Group Exhibit

Inter-medio is an exhibition showcasing Latinx artists whose works explore the complex relationships between land, memory, and materiality. It reflects on themes of fragmentation, language, and connections, examining shifting territories—both physical and imagined—and how we inhabit and shape the world. The works delve into ecosystems, landscapes, and borders, questioning boundaries and emphasizing fluidity, resistance, and communication. Artists like Alexandra McCormick, Alissa Osumi, and Saul Sanchez engage with the unseen and the invisible, while others like Kimberly Orjuela,  Ignacio Mendizabal, Sacha Perez Del Solar and Alejandra Zamudio use materiality to bridge history and contemporary experiences. The exhibition challenges traditional frameworks, proposing alternative ways to understand identity, place, and memory. Through their practices, the artists invite a reflective, slow-paced engagement that transcends boundaries and reimagines cultural codes.

Curated by Riesbri, an artist represented by JANO Gallery, the exhibition will be held at JANO Gallery, Suite 200, 3819 Wellington, H4G 1V2 and will run from Wednesday, February 5th, 2025 to Monday, March 22nd, 2025. The opening night will be a festive evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Inter-medio (long text by Riesbri)

This exhibition gathers a group of Latinx artists whose works engage with the intricate relationships between land, memory, and materiality. Drawing from themes of fragmentation, language, and connections, the exhibition traces the contours of shifting territories -  both physical and imagined - while reflecting on the ways we inhabit, observe, and shape the world.

Works by Alexandra McCormick and Alissa Osumi explore ecosystems, landscapes, and the unseen paths that define our existence, such as where water flows and the limits it encounters. Borders appear not only as dividing lines but as fluid thresholds, spaces of tension where fragility meets resistance and where silence gives way to new forms of communication.

Saul Sanchez’s work explores the conceptual values of painting and the conditions of image representation. Examining color interpretation, visibility, and the dialogue between traditional and contemporary practices, he investigates how installation, painting, and drawing interact with commercial, institutional, and educational contexts. His practice challenges viewers to reconsider how meaning and value are constructed.

Materiality shapes the exhibition, balancing nature’s flexibility with human-made permanence. Kimberly Orjuela, a Latinx diaspora artist, creates terracotta sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian traditions, weaving personal and collective narratives to connect history with contemporary experience.  Alejandra Zamudio transforms fragments of reality, material, and culture into narratives that explore personal, societal, and psychological dimensions. Her work reveals and challenges the codes that shape our perception and movement through the world.

Inter-Medio creates a conceptual space where dichotomies—isolation and connection, structure and fluidity, permanence and impermanence—merge into dynamic relationships. The works challenge boundaries, reimagining islands as networks and borders as sites of exchange.

The exhibition invites reflection on the fragmentary nature of contemporary existence, shifting identities, and memory. It encourages viewers to reconsider the frameworks shaping their perception, proposing new ways to interpret borders, materiality, and cultural codes. Here, art becomes a conduit for rediscovery, revealing possibilities within fragmentation and fostering dialogues that transcend boundaries.
