Collection: Cinthya Chalifoux

Cinthya Chalifoux is located in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) and is of mixed heritage descent (Anishinaabeg, French). Formally trained as a tailor, Chalifoux has practiced the art of Bespoke (Old English term for Couture) and is recognized as a master in this technique that implies rigid notions of 3D constructions as well as traditional fibers treatments. She learned the meticulous art of tailoring in Montreal (2002-2005), then bespoke craftsmanship, alongside fifth-generation tailor Rory Duffy (2015) as well as at AFT in France (2016). From 2015 to 2018 she also learned the art of haute couture embroideries (Lunéville, needlework, and goldwork embroidery). Chalifoux is recognized by her peers, as a Métiers d’Art crafter (2015). The artist is currently concentrating on her art practice and studying fine arts at Concordia University, in the Fibres department.

***

Cinthya Chalifoux is a multi-disciplinary artist that is preoccupied with the intersections of the subjects of self-identity, theology, overconsumption, crafts (Métiers d’Art) as cultural patrimony and genders within society. Chalifoux sees her practice as Art, her role as one of a cultural worker in the form of a Story teller.

Several traditional fibres treatments and construction techniques are used in her work such as handcraft, soft sculpture, dyes and embroidery. The artist puts great importance into contextualizing her art and therefore uses the notion of places to create spaces for introspection; to inhabit a space with art becomes another vessel to the core themes that the artist explores, contrasts and questions.

To construct the future, one should look at the past, understand the importance of it, in order to be a citizen of “the now”.
