The cement bird embodies childhood dreams and fears, fragile freedom, play’s control and release

Ciment fondu, wood, thread

Tous ne peuvent pas voler is part of Rêver Voler, a body of work inspired by the childhood dream of flying. Within the narrative of this serie, a child trains a bird to learn how to fly. Built upon the dual nature of play—as both a system of rules and constraints and as a realm of imagination and freedom—this series examines how the yearning for absolute freedom becomes intertwined with impulses of control.
Composed of two elements, Tous ne peuvent pas voler offers a poetic reflection on the relationship between the body and space in childhood, along the axis between sky and ground. The desire to rise and attain freedom is accompanied by the fear of losing one’s footing. Drawing on primitive symbols from the world of childhood—the bird, the ladder, and the ball of yarn—the work plays with the tension of suspended movement. The floating ladder, reminiscent of playground structures or treehouses, enters into dialogue with the bird cast in molten cement, whose materiality merges innocence with an ancestral presence.
Rêver Voler (2023-2024) marks Bois’s first body of work to delve into the core themes of her practice: childhood play, the relationship with animals, and the boundary between naivety and control.
