Two armies of female archers raise their bows toward a sun with a human face.

acrylic on canvas

Soleil places a large, anthropomorphic sun at the centre of the composition. Its face becomes the focus of two opposing armies of female archers, positioned on either side and aiming their arrows directly toward it. The scene evokes a confrontation, but the nature of the conflict remains deliberately unclear. The sun traditionally represents life, energy, illumination, power, and knowledge. Here, however, this source of light becomes the target of collective action. The archers transform the familiar symbol of the sun into something that can be challenged, threatened, or perhaps even confronted. The presence of two armies creates a sense of symmetry and tension. Although the women appear to be on opposing sides, they share the same target and are united by their gestures. This ambiguity raises questions about collective power and conflict: are these women fighting against the same authority, or are they participating in a larger ritual? The work explores power, opposition, collective action, and the desire to challenge forces that appear untouchable. The anthropomorphic sun can ultimately be read as a symbol of authority, consciousness, nature, or an overwhelming force beyond human control.
