A woman and a goat, covered in bells, become targets of collective judgment and accusation.

acrylic on canvas

Bouc émissaire depicts a woman seated on a goat, both covered in bells that announce their every movement. Around them, disembodied hands point toward the pair, creating an atmosphere of accusation and collective judgment. The goat evokes the traditional figure of the scapegoat, onto whom a community projects its fears, failures, or guilt. Yet the reason for the accusation remains unknown. The bells suggest both ritual and exposure: they make the woman impossible to ignore, turning her presence into a source of noise and attention. Through this surreal scene, the painting explores blame, social pressure, stigma, and the mechanisms through which an individual becomes the target of collective judgment.
