Photography

One morning, I am seized by an impulse: to freeze farm compost scraps in containers found around the studio. Once frozen, I carry the blocks to the greenhouse to photograph their thaw in the soft light. Placed on agricultural mesh netting and held upright by a butter knife, the blocks slide and fracture. From this break emerges an exposed anatomy: a burgundy stem, a hollow like a belly, and Swiss chard veins bound by sewing thread. The fall opens a gap in the solid matter. It is within this interstice, this space of vulnerability, that decay is suspended and the living nevertheless persists. This intuitive gesture gently cradles an ancient fear: that of watching my consciousness disappear. Within the translucency of the ice, the fragility of the living no longer signals a freezing or an end, but settles into the unexpected
shape of a botanical embrace.
