This painting addresses the deliberate refusal to acknowledge inherited social issues, symbolized by a figure who shields her gaze while complying with established power structures.

Inspired by an archive of vintage photographs from the 1960s-80s I found during a trip to Ecuador, this series of paintings examines the social dynamics, displays of power, and traditions of a nation still marked by its colonial past. Through the lense of memory, these paintings portray social habits as generational heritage, and brings into question the way in which Ecuadorians interact with themselves and their history. What is purposefully not acknowledged or talked about? What do we purposefully display? What does it mean to have privilege in a historically unequal society? Painting about my country is an atempt to wrap my head around what the Ecuadorian identity is, which in many respects is imagined and a result of a historical collage of conflict and resistance.
