An eight-armed woman holds cups of fire, framed by an eighteenth-century astronomical eclipse illustration.

acrylic on canvas

Huit de coupe reimagines the Tarot card Eight of Cups through a surreal, ritualistic female figure. A woman with eight arms holds a cup filled with fire in each hand. She wears a long toga and a crown of flowers, combining references to classical imagery, ritual, femininity, and the natural world. The eight cups depart from the traditional association of the suit of Cups with water and emotional experience. Here, each vessel contains fire, introducing a tension between containment and transformation. Fire can represent desire, vitality, destruction, purification, and renewal. The multiplicity of arms suggests an ability to hold several forces, emotions, or experiences simultaneously. Behind the woman, an ornamental black-and-white frame is inspired by an eighteenth-century volume of Physica Sacra, particularly its illustrations concerning the phenomenon of eclipses. The scientific and religious imagery of this historical source introduces another layer to the composition, bringing together astronomical observation, symbolism, and the mysterious forces of the natural world. The work creates a dialogue between Tarot symbolism and early scientific representations of celestial phenomena. The eclipse imagery evokes moments when light is temporarily obscured, while the flaming cups suggest an internal source of light and energy. Together, these elements transform the traditional theme of departure associated with the Eight of Cups into an image of transition, transformation, and the accumulation of experiences carried forward.
