À vol d’oiseau is a artist-book depicting oil-painted birds blending into road maps, transforming cartography into a poetic meditation on inhabiting unfamiliar territory.

À vol d’oiseau is an artist’s book that explores the experience of inhabiting an unfamiliar territory and the fragile process of forming a sense of belonging. It was produced during the pandemic, while the artist was confined far from home, in Germany. Composed of eleven pages, the book features oil paintings applied directly onto ancient road maps. Across the pages, birds painted in a prone, grounded position appear to merge with the cartographic networks beneath them, their bodies echoing the lines of roads and intersections.
The road map—typically a tool for orientation—becomes here a metaphor for a place known only through names and visual markers, devoid of personal memory. The birds evoke halted movement and tentative rooting, suggesting the difficulty of extending one’s presence within a foreign landscape. Viewed from above, the imagery reflects an attempt to grasp territory intellectually before it can be lived, revealing the quiet tension between navigation, displacement, and the desire to belong.
